Hi, my name is Jake Ausdemore. I am currently a freshman majoring in both Cognitive Science and Applied and Computational Mathematics. I joined the Image Understanding Lab in Spring 2018 to pursue my interests in the process of perception, particularly how our automatic understanding gained from perceiving the outside world affects our everyday experiences. Despite the enormous amount of processing in the brain which underlies perception, people easily and automatically acquire perceptual information about the thousands of objects and faces they encounter each day in order to navigate daily existence. One aspect of perception I am fascinated by is the issue of prosopagnosia, or the inability to recognize faces. The questions of exactly what failures within the perceptual process cause this difficulty and how this inability to recognize faces could be ameliorated are particularly engaging. Research in the Image Understanding Lab allows me to explore this and other compelling topics while developing my individual abilities and helping to expand scientific knowledge.
